Sturgeon City Science Institute Adventure

We went to Sturgeon City and learned about different reptiles from around the world, and some local. My favorite was the tortoise named Matthew Murdoch. It was named this because the tortoise was born without eyes, but it is still doing really well with the help of the specialist. We also saw a plethora of different snakes, some coming all the way from Asia!

We also went to a lob-lolly pine forest where we waded in a lily pond, and we learned about the pine forest and how they use it to restore its original habitat. They told us about the carbon cycle, and how they use controlled fires to keep a balance in the forest. The forest is also treated with filtered water from the treatment plant near by. When we measured the pH level of the lily pond, it was slightly less than seven, which showed the plant was correctly cleaning the water.

We went wading in the Intracoastal Waterway where we measured the water quality and we went and used nets to try to see some of the different life forms in the waters. Most of the life that we found was near the grass, and included shrimp and different types of fish. Out of the water, there were many crabs in the sand.
